A 37-story mixed-use development on one of Shanghai’s busiest avenues, Nanjing West Road, includes retail, cultural entertainment, and office space. Target Insight: Exploit the prominent location of the site to its full commercial potential.

Outcome:
A successful, identifiable addition to the Shanghai skyline. The building’s public plaza was designed to draw shoppers into an interior atrium – a welcoming entry to a bustling, five-story retail podium.

Hopkins Practice Office - Hopkins Architects

On a triangular Marylebone site, enclosed by the backs of domestic buildings.  An office campus of two interlinked buildings, has been developed as congenial and cost effective workspace for up to 120 people, interspersed with sheltered outdoor areas, which add variety to the working environment.

They are constructed using the Patera building system, which was developed for a client by Hopkins Architects as standardised, single-storey buildings suitable for industrial or office use, which could be made as kits, delivered to the site in containers and erected quickly with minimal plant.

The original prototype building has a sophisticated tubular-steel lattice frame, placed outside the external envelope of the building.  The same insulated panels are used for the walls and roof of the external envelope. The gable ends are glazed. A later version has simpler columnar supports and sufficient head height to accommodate mezzanine floors within.

The campus has one of each building type, used as design studios by the different teams working on office projects.  A glass box, housing the entrance and reception, is sheltered by a tensile membrane canopy, which continues on to form a covered way linking the buildings.

Target Insight: The principles of simplicity and transparency guided the design process. Also important was the ability to control privacy, enhance access to views and daylight and provide a user-friendly environment that emphasizes inter-office communication.

Outcome: The design solution is elegant and rational, providing spatial flexibility as well as an attractive and comfortable working environment. From the point of entry and throughout the office floors, expanses of clear glazing allow spectacular, unobstructed skyline views and streams of natural light.

All glazed interior office fronts incorporate integral motorized blinds for privacy, when needed. Conference rooms and other shared facilities are placed in similar locations on all floors to improve way finding while also creating small hubs for use by individual business units to promote spontaneous interactions.

Olympic VeloPark London 2012 - Hopkins Architects

The building seeks to form an elegant response to the brief using simple materials in an efficient manner to meet the client’s aspirations within the available budget. Cycling inspired the concept for the Velodrome.  The bike is an ingenious ergonomic object, honed to unrivalled efficiency; we wanted the same application of design creativity and engineering rigour that goes into the design and manufacture of the bike to manifest itself in the building. Not as a mimicry of the bicycle but as a three dimensional response to the functional requirements of the venue whose distinctive form has emerged from an integrated design team approach which focused on the performance and efficiency of every aspect of the building.

The Velodrome contains 6,000 seats in both Olympic and Legacy modes and responds to both contexts in an appropriate manner with minimal transformation.  The upper and lower seating tiers are split by the main public circulation concourse which forms the main point of entry into the arena and allows spectators to maintain contact with the action on the track as they circulate around the building. The concourse is fully glazed to allow views both into and out of the building.  It also helps to visually separate the Western Red Cedar clad upper bowl from the ground floor back of house accommodation which is largely hidden behind the landscaped earth berms that form a visual plinth at the East and West ends of the building.

The Olympic Delivery Authority set a number of sustainability and material targets; through careful consideration and integration of the architecture, structure and building services the design has met or exceeded these requirements. Work on the competition scheme began in May 2007 with announcement of the results made in August 2007. Work started on site on 23rd February 2009 and was completed ahead of programme and on budget on 13th January 2011.

The London 2012 VeloPark was a collaboration with Expedition Engineering, BDSP and Grant Associates.

Prince Henry, Little Bay, Sydney - batessmart

The pavilion style buildings have high ceilings, long wide verandahs and excellent orientation to views and winter sun, making them a precursor to modern coastal architecture. They are rectilinear, classically proportioned and have strong repetition, a great sense of order and strong indoor/outdoor connection. The four Flowers Wards will each be sympathetically adapted to four heritage residences of three bedrooms ranging between 160 and 175sqm.

The sub floor will be excavated to create parking, storerooms and cellars and will provide direct internal access to each apartment. The original Hill Theatre which was built in the 1930s will be adapted into two oversized high end villas. The adaptation from Hospital to apartment living is founded on respect and consideration for the original design and an understanding of how the buildings functioned originally.

Townhouses

Stage 2 consists of 46 2-storey townhouses with the majority of units having secure underground parking directly below the unit itself. All the townhouses will consist of 3-bedrooms with 14 units having a third level loft space to accommodate a possible fourth bed or study.

The units are all oriented to take full advantage of possible ocean views as well as address the surrounding urban street network and maximise aspect to the north. Each unit will contain the living areas at the ground floor level to allow for direct access to the private landscaped external courts to the rear. Material choices will respond to the corrosive marine environment, and colours and textures will harmonise with the coastal landscape.

Little Bay is an historically and culturally significant area. Art Deco heritage buildings of high conservation value are to be rejuvenated and reused to create grand residential apartments. Additional new apartment buildings will maximise views of the golf course, ocean, city and surrounding low-level bushland. Their careful positioning across the site ensures a complimentary dialogue is established between this new scale of building and the existing heritage buildings. Conservation and reuse of water, gas and solar heating, cross ventilation, and passive solar design represent aspects of Bates Smart’s holistic approach to sustaining and improving the existing natural environment. The quality of the natural environment will be improved through our innovative responses to the issues of stormwater run-off and energy efficiency. Material choices will respond to the corrosive marine environment, and colours and textures will harmonise with the coastal landscape. The landscape design will enhance the residential amenity of the community while maintaining view corridors and ocean vistas and generous feelings of open space, maximising natural light and views.
