Target Insight: The principles of simplicity and transparency guided the design process. Also important was the ability to control privacy, enhance access to views and daylight and provide a user-friendly environment that emphasizes inter-office communication.

Outcome: The design solution is elegant and rational, providing spatial flexibility as well as an attractive and comfortable working environment. From the point of entry and throughout the office floors, expanses of clear glazing allow spectacular, unobstructed skyline views and streams of natural light.

All glazed interior office fronts incorporate integral motorized blinds for privacy, when needed. Conference rooms and other shared facilities are placed in similar locations on all floors to improve way finding while also creating small hubs for use by individual business units to promote spontaneous interactions.

The materials and forms were chosen specifically. Concrete is solid, dependable, reliable. Circles are stable and self centring. Metal panels are easily adapted, good conductors, and can be reinvented.

These materials reflect Baulderstoneís secure and dynamic nature. The design also responds to their excellent staff culture by providing a ëclubhouseí so that site staff are able to feel equally at home as office based staff. It was vital to the success of the project that this space becomes home to one and all.

GEK Group Headquarters, Athens - Hopkins Architects

The rhomboid shaped site, on a busy avenue, lay between two diagonal roads. The office accommodation is arranged in two wings on either side of an open central courtyard where the environmental conditions are easier to control than on the busy surrounding streets.

Open windows and walkways connect the two wings. The whole courtyard space is a tempered environment, which is shaded in the summer and protected from the cold winds in winter. The staff restaurant is positioned on a overlooking mezzanine level.

The circulation and service cores are at the narrow end of the site. The elevations respond to Athens’ strong, bright sun. The two external elevations face towards low angled sun to the east or west so the window areas are small. The remaining solid areas are infilled with stainless steel panels.  Inside these are bookcase and filing zones, to create a thermal buffer.

The only sunlight, which enters the working areas, is reflected and shaded to prevent glare. A controlled palette of carefully crafted components and materials – stainless steel, concrete and timber was used. The only “luxury” material was the use of white Greek marble to the floor of the central courtyard atrium, to contrast with the exposed timber shuttered concrete surfaces elsewhere in the building.

Workshop processes exposed a stratified organisation that valued its intimacy, however its management understood the need to communicate and to be nimble Staff were committed to reduce stratification however, not at a large loss of privacy.

The design provided a series of nooks that acted as pinch decision points linked by a subtle change in floor finish and lighting. This effectively ensured people travelled along the routes designed and hence avoided the traps of encroaching upon the individuals’ privacy.

Materials were selected without veneers, honing or polish to reflect an honest state. Plywood rather that timber veneer, a flat terrazzo floor rather than tiles, a cementious coating to bench tops rather than 2pac.

The result produced a professional yet understated result that represents the client group of Slater & Gordon. Deliberate positioning of common zones encourage movement to other parts of the floor, improving health and well being.

A common staff breakout zone with a deliberately different feel to the rest of the floor encourages usage as a refuge from the intensity that is working in the law.

A cellular office environment was treated in the most transparent form possible to ensure as much equity of daylight as possible to the entire staffing group, and detailing consistency allowed the break-up of the cellular form to ensure visual relief along one’s journey through the space.

The facility design helped allay their concerns as they now have more spacious and comfortable working quarters tailored to their specific needs. A careful balance between accessibility and security was achieved in the design.
