Alnwick Garden Pavilion - Hopkins Architects

First landscaped in 1750 and with a long and storied history, the Alnwick Garden had fallen into disrepair and was closed by 1950.

A major redevelopment began in 1997 and by 2001 the first of several phases of dramatically transformed and contemporary public garden space was opened to the public.

The revamped garden proved extremely popular for members of the public and a building was soon needed to welcome and care for them. The new pavilion we designed for the site serves this purpose and is built off the enclosing entrance wall on a site overlooking the Garden.

It includes a restaurant and function room arranged on either side of a covered terrace from which visitors to the site can enjoy the garden in shelter and shade. Kitchens and backup spaces are housed below.

Conceived as a contemporary greenhouse, the building houses organic, barrel-vaulted spaces formed by timber and steel lattice roofs covered in inflated transparent or translucent ETFE pillows. These reduce the effects of solar heating and glare. External walls are either glazed with sliding doors or fixed with solid timber panels.

Project Description:
A 37-story mixed-use development on one of Shanghai’s busiest avenues, Nanjing West Road, includes retail, cultural entertainment, and office space. Target Insight: Exploit the prominent location of the site to its full commercial potential.

Outcome:
A successful, identifiable addition to the Shanghai skyline. The building’s public plaza was designed to draw shoppers into an interior atrium – a welcoming entry to a bustling, five-story retail podium.

Hopkins Practice Office - Hopkins Architects

On a triangular Marylebone site, enclosed by the backs of domestic buildings.  An office campus of two interlinked buildings, has been developed as congenial and cost effective workspace for up to 120 people, interspersed with sheltered outdoor areas, which add variety to the working environment.

They are constructed using the Patera building system, which was developed for a client by Hopkins Architects as standardised, single-storey buildings suitable for industrial or office use, which could be made as kits, delivered to the site in containers and erected quickly with minimal plant.

The original prototype building has a sophisticated tubular-steel lattice frame, placed outside the external envelope of the building.  The same insulated panels are used for the walls and roof of the external envelope. The gable ends are glazed. A later version has simpler columnar supports and sufficient head height to accommodate mezzanine floors within.

The campus has one of each building type, used as design studios by the different teams working on office projects.  A glass box, housing the entrance and reception, is sheltered by a tensile membrane canopy, which continues on to form a covered way linking the buildings.

In addition, provide the Feature Post Production Group with offices and primary film/tape editing space.   Target Insight: Not only is well-insulated work space mandatory, but acoustical separation is required between group activities happening all through the facility.

Outcome: For the Sound Edit Group, two large dubbing stages were designed for digital sound and picture, each self-contained and clustered with six work rooms, a complete pantry, a relaxation lounge with entertainment center, and an outdoor patio.

Additional resources include an Automatic Dialogue Replacement studio, DVD edit rooms, and sound edit rooms. To support Feature Post Production, resources include main offices and storage vaults, as well as an executive Avid room, three standard Avid rooms and a guest edit room.

The workspace design process involved detailed studies of movement, congregation zones and daylight to establish a commonality of language that related a single story.

This assisted these discrete business units to work together to achieve a unified result for Amcor. A palette of materials and forms were carefully considered to reflect the movement of Amcor from a traditional manufacturer to a modern business.

Its facade was restored to the original exposed brickwork and rendered cornices and the existing pub was retained at ground floor. New apartments inserted into the fabric of the existing building at the upper levels maintained the original heritage character including floor to ceiling heights and room configurations where possible.

Two new wings of residential apartments were added, sympathetic in scale to the hotel but clearly contrasting and contemporary in nature, creating an ‘L’ shaped building that follows the street alignment and encloses an internal gardenc courtyard.

Dual orientation apartments have cross ventilation, ocean views to the living rooms and north facing bedrooms with balconies overlooking the internal courtyard. Bi-folding shutters set within steel framed balconies provide privacy for residents and animate the street facades. Above the hotel a single level of apartments is setback from the street edge, extending across the existing and new buildings and uniting the composition.

This level is clad in layers of glass aluminium louvres for a contemporary interpretation of the rooftop forms of historic buildings. In addition, the development included significant improvements to the public open space in what was previously an informal parking area.
