The reception desk is a heavy, monolithic block of honed stone, which appears to hover above the floor, with inset blocks of stacked glass. Leading from the lobby is an intriguing, contemporary interpretation of the traditional grand hotel staircase.

Generous stone steps of contrasting texture and colour are enclosed in a box of glowing etched glass. The lobby floor is made of irregular slabs of warm limestone, contrasting with textured, roughly split stone of the walls to reveal niches of brilliant, saturated colour.

Bates Smart designed the six-star Crown Towers hotel interiors with 260 rooms, 56 suites and 32 villas, lobby and restaurants, spa complex, main gaming area and VIP gaming salons with ‘sky salons’ on the upper levels.

Crown Macau, Levels 8, 9 + 37, Macau, China - Batessmart

Our brief was to set a new world benchmark for the design and quality of exclusive gaming environments. Crafting a sense of modern glamour with a personal penthouse apartment style was the design intent for Level 37 salons. Each of the three salons have spectacular views and natural light.

The palette of colours and materials were kept light, fresh and refined, contrasted against dark timber herringbone parquetry floors. Each salon is embellished with custom designed crystal encrusted chandeliers, finely stitched leather wall panelling, custom designed rugs and glass entry screens.

The salons are then individually layered withpersonality pieces and commissioned artworks. This luxurious apartment concept was continued through the level 8 salons. Here, the seven salons are linked with a ceremonial landscaped stone path flanked by water and textured sandstone walls.

The theatrical repetition of grand light fixtures, over-scaled door handles, entrance lanterns and stone paving contrasts to the lush interiors of the salons. Upon entry there is a warm palette of materials, richly textured fabric wall panelling and timbers.

A layer of intricacy is created through the use of metallic shimmer screens and custom designed carpets with a pattern inspired by radiating starbursts, all contribute to creating a sumptuous environment.

The design approach on level 9 differed to the residential concepts on the salon floors and focused on revealing anevolving sequence of spaces. Highly textured coin-like pods are arranged to create different zones and levels of privacy for VIP gaming patrons.

The main bar follows the building façade line. Its highly reflective mirror, polished metals and floating ceiling formed by hundreds of soft glass baubles creates a spectacular focal point.

Urbanest Student Housing, Haymarket, Sydney - batessmart

The 16-storey ‘L’ shaped building accommodates 334 students in four to six bedroom cluster apartments arranged to maximise the number of apartments with northern aspect and dual orientation. Communal recreation facilities are arranged around a courtyard at ground floor with a single level basement accommodating plant space and bicycle parking. The building form acknowledges the site’s corner location and has been designed to reinforce the surrounding scale and character by aligning the tower setback with the adjacent buildings.

Urbanest Student Housing, Haymarket, Sydney - batessmart

Modular prefabricated wall and window panels are repeated in an alternating pattern across the facade to create a dynamic composition, with expressed horizontal band at floor level providing the building with a sense of scale and horizontal expression. The full height window panels increase the sense of space within the bedrooms and are divided into a fixed clear glass fixed panel and operable coloured glass panel. The brightly coloured glass panels are inspired by the surrounding context and reflect the youthful vitality of student life.

Kent Care Tentenden - JesticoWhiles

Kent Care Tenterden is an integrated care centre for elderly patients. The scheme is 15,419 square feet and provides 60 en-suite bedrooms arranged in clusters of 15, with a central shared dining space and lounge.

The scheme includes facilities for occupational therapy, assessment facilities, kitchens and bathrooms, treatment rooms, and gymnasiums.

There are also offices for social service care managers, community assessment and rehabilitation team. The development also features an emergency ambulance station facility.

The gently sloping site has unrivalled views across the Kent countryside. Traditional brick walls with treated and dark stained softwood and a pitched reconstituted slate roof complements the local vernacular.
