Building Interior Decorating of Utopia, Broughton Hall Pavilion by Hopkins Architects. A new pavilion, providing an attractive communal facility at the centre of the Broughton Hall estate.

Broughton Hall, altered in the 19C to its present imposing form, is built out of local stone, set amidst 3000 acres of parkland.  The surrounding, listed, redundant out-buildings have been progressively converted to provide modern office accommodation for up to 40 businesses, who employ more than 500 staff.

There was a need for a communal building on the site to act as a focus, providing a large common room, rooms for meeting and presentation and an area for lunch and evening events, with associated catering and service spaces. An ideal site was identified at the top of the former walled kitchen garden, which had fallen into disuse.  It has a commanding view over the remodelled garden to the surrounding countryside.  The new single-storey pavilion sits confidently on its timber plinth, a contemporary yet natural building.

Entrance is across an open veranda, which surrounds the pavilion.  The central common room has frameless glass, front and back, and is flanked, symmetrically by timber clad ‘book ends’, housing the smaller rooms, whose structure incorporates the laminated timber columns that support the roof – a clear- span steel truss, with a central roof light.  Overhanging eaves shade the windows and protect the veranda, with its outside seating area and graded steps leading to the garden.
