Building Interior Decorating of St Paul’s Academy by JesticoWhiles. St Paul’s Academy is sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark and is the first Academy in the London Borough of Greenwich. Located on the site of the dilapidated Abbey Wood Secondary School, the new Academy caters for 1,200 children between the ages of 11 to 16. Specialising in sports and enterprise, the building improves sports facilities on the site by providing new recreation spaces and a resource for the local community.
The dynamic form of the building is emphasised by oversailing roofs and large, well proportioned windows. Whilst conceived as a singular, compact building, the design of the new Academy is a composition of several different principal elements. The building is arranged around a central covered atrium of six learning areas which maximises the available site area for sport pitches. To the northern side of the building are the more public functions of the Academy and to the southern side are the six private learning areas arranged around two learning courts with classrooms. To meet the brief for a flexible learning environment there is an open-access for each learning area and a variety of classroom sizes. The building is predominantly naturally ventilated and uses thermal mass and night-time cooling to reduce heat build-up.
